The most wonderful library in the world

DOK Library Concept Center, in Delft, rivals Disneyland as the happiest place in the world. Amazing innovation and fun hardworking people abound here. I've found my dream workplace. The children's librarian was awesome and there's an art lending program. So cool.

Best Careers 2009: Librarian

US News and World Report listed librarianship as a career with strong outlooks and high job satisfaction for their 2009 best careers list. A few of the other careers listed include locksmith and clergy. I'm glad to be in the library camp, although a landscape architect would make a lovely second career.

FYI. Bye.

les classy bucket

we hosted a dinner on sunday night. our apartment was transformed into a restaurant of sorts, a restaurant called les classy bucket. the food was primarily collected from jenn's garden. we supplemented a few items with a visit to the capitol hill farmer's market. jenn was our fearless leader. under her direction, we labored for eight hours, and then a meal was born.

our chef's vision, gorgeous and delicious:
green salad
greek salad (with green beans)
two kinds of fresh baked breads
handmade ravioli stuffed with beats and potatoes
ravioli - again with the handmade - stuffed with chard and ricotta in a vegetable broth, freckled with kernels of corn
wine and peach/raspberry/blueberry pie with whipped cream on top

tomatoes from the garden

moxie nights

i've got a new ritual. it started last week and involves me having the apartment to myself on wednesday nights. the ritual is composed of two parts:

1. simply to enjoy my space / be a space maker /savor my time and express my gratitude for this sweet little life i've got.
2. listen to the roadhouse + riz because they play quality music.

it's a goddamn great ritual. i'm off...

uck, cut! since riz is on vacation and the dnc is underway i scratched #2 and listened intently to ex-presidents, senators and our future president speak.

i'll be returning with the ritual next week. for now please laugh with me at the art project of an only child and indulge me as i post another self-portrait.

"blah blah blah!" she said.

pie times at apartment s

i used to be a pie baker at grandma violet's pies. we were wholesale bakers, selling to local co-ops and fancy grocery stores around seattle in the late 1990's. it was a two woman operation. beth, the owner, used her grandma's (can you guess her name?) marvelous crust recipe as the foundation of the business. there is a secret ingredient. i considered revealing it here by including the recipe but that type of secret is too precious to expose.

it was a truly delightful place to work. and i learned to make a mean pie.

i came home on wednesday and looked at our refrigerator and found a few pints of blueberries and strawberries at their ripest point. i said to myself, "how can we eat them all before they go bad?" and "i don't bake enough pies!" thus, i determined that it was my duty as a wife to make the best fresh berry and peach (we had some super ripe, super yummy ones) pie. so i did. here is a sampling of photos that i took along the pie highway:

Palm Springs Weekend

Last year K gave me the book, Palm Springs Weekend, for my birthday. This year he took me on a surprise getaway to that very place. Lucky 30!

We left on FRIDAY. After checking into the motel we found our room which was called The Leopard Lounge, a complimentary theme to the HCFF we had planned. We dropped our bags, did the mandatory run and jump on the bed and promptly set out to the poolside bar for the daily happy hour (free! whee!). We each drank three Orbitini's before walking into town for a just okay dinner at Matchbox. I was really fired up about a rude interaction between a waiter and a busser which interfered with the taste of the food. We got to dine outside though, which, I do believe, is one of life's greatest pleasures.

Before the day was done we took a dip in the pool.

On SATURDAY we each ate a cookie, learned to ride a tandem bicycle, and marveled at some of the fantastic midcentury homes about town. See:

SUNDAY was stormy so we rented a car, drove out past the windmill fields and followed the road to Joshua Tree National Park. It was all stunningly beautiful.

This trip surpassed all my birthday dreams. And I still get to have a dance party!
